8: good-bye
from The giraffe

Sébastien Smirou translated by Andrew Zawacki

With habit we confuse the savanna
one summer to another we make nothing out
but a spot of fatigue that lengthens
here life is lived out quicken your step my buttercup
until winter the giraffe wanders off like so
to the horizon from a jeep we watch the acacia
of her neck dwindle to blend with the sand
if you see what I mean.
