the best
we can
do is

kiss
lips
before
an eye
reopens

Instructions for Folding in on Yourself

By: Deanna Larsen

Left hand— left hand!

Can you close your palm?

Can you crawl

from this comfortable drawer?

Mothballs in your mouth

like some sartorial gravedigger.

Tuck your chin in the pit

of your knees—curl curl

your toes into your neck.

Sad and stuck at the bottom

of the clothes hamper—

set up shop amongst the socks.

Open your law office

for monsters. Collect

threads in your teeth.

Strip yourself threadbare.

Naked—wait in the cotton

tied ‘round your limbs

in a perfect bow.
